Here’s a delicious way to learn about the phases of the moon. All you’ll need are some black and white creme cookies, like Oreos, a butter knife, and the name labels below!
Start by watching the video above. Twist apart your chocolate cookies, leaving as much of the white creme as possible. Using the butter knife, scrape the creme off of the portion of the cookie that you want to appear black (representing the night sky).
The remaining white creme represents the phase of the moon! For example, a First Quarter moon will be white on the right half of the cookie.

Next, speak to your child about the names of each cookie. “Point at the Full Moon” or “Hand me the New Moon” are good ways to practice new vocabulary.
Finally, click here to download the moon phase label cards! Print, laminate with packing tape if you have it, and cut out the labels. Practice reading and labeling your moon cookies, then enjoy snacking on the cookies when you’re done!
