To do: Make an event out of looking through a telescope. If you don’t have one, get creative with a paper towel or toilet paper roll.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Telescope, cardboard roll

Looking through a telescope, whether at an object or celestial being is a whole lot of fun. Try it with your family!
Choose a landmark, say a big tree in a neighbor’s backyard. Use a real telescope or your DIY paper towel telescope to observe your target. Speak in detail about what you see! The color of the bark, the birds in the trees, or the shades of the leaves.
Next, try observing bodies in the sky. Is the moon up yet? Are there some stars that are brighter than others? Imagine being in a space station, orbiting around the Earth!
Materials for a DIY telescope:
- Toilet paper or paper towel roll
- Construction paper + glue stick
- Stickers of stars or planets if you have them
Invite your child to decorate the outside of their telescope as much or as little as they would like. Remember to recycle it when you’re finished!
