To do: Draw a subject from a new angle, like your child might.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Paints and a subject from around the house.
__
Have you ever noticed that your child draws objects differently than you do? They might draw a bird with a beak, voluminous tail feathers and expressive features, whereas adults may simply draw a few V shapes in the sky.
That’s why this activity involves exploring shapes and how we see them.
Alongside your child, find something to draw, perhaps an apple. Chances are, you will draw the apple straight on, maybe with a stem or a leaf. But what other angles can we draw?
Have you ever tried drawing the bottom of an apple? How about drawing it from above like you’re flying? Finding new ways to think about the world around us is always exciting. Explore familiar items at home and make them feel new by looking from a different angle.
Remember that there is no ONE correct way to represent an object on paper, and savor your child’s unique view on the world!
For the older child, introduce them to Cubism and cubist artists such as Pablo Picasso or Paul Cezanne! Find an item they are interested in, and draw 5 sides of it. Then challenge them, and ask if they can draw all these 5 sides overlapping, or to show all the sides at the same time. It’s an odd concept to grasp, and a fun challenge to tackle. Enjoy!
