To do: Involve your child in getting your outdoor furniture clean and ready for summer.
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Washing bucket, soft cloth
A time honored tradition come spring or summer is cleaning off the patio furniture from it’s long dormancy in the garage. Even if your summer stuff has been out all year long, give it a face lift with a nice wash!
This type of practice life exercise will let your child practice big gross motor movements, allow them to work with water, and get them involved in family chores.
So, consider the typical tasks you do each spring, whether it’s washing off chairs and tables, scrubbing out the kid’s swimming pool, or airing out the patio cushions. Then, decide what tasks your child can help you with.
Children are happy to help when given the opportunity. So rather than imposing your will upon them, “You have to do this chore.” try “Would you like to prepare the patio with me so we can enjoy outside time together?”
If your child gets off task half-way through, that’s ok. You can always complete your job another day. Remind your child of the work they did to help the next time you enjoy a clean swimming pool or chair: “Do you remember washing this chair off? You did it!”
