To Do: Encourage your child to help others with tasks like zipping a coat or putting shoes on.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: A friends or sibling who doesn’t mind a little help.
Learning new skills is an interesting thing. A child might work and work at it, or suddenly one day, they are able to do it! One way to celebrate the skills your child has mastered is by encouraging them to help others.
Here are some situations to try out.
- If your child has just mastered zippers, ask if they would like to help zip up a younger sibling’s jacket.
- Perhaps you have one hand full, but want to put a mitten on. Ask your child to help you get the other mitten on!
- If your child has a friend, either at school or visiting your house, invite your child to help their friend rather than jumping in yourself. “Would you like to help Charlie put his coat on? I know you are an expert at zipping.”
A child will be happy to show off their skills while helping others! What a great way to reinforce newly mastered skills while giving a helping hand.
