If you enjoy outdoor adventures as a family, consider making rather than purchasing snacks.
Meal prep is an important part of any nature getaway. A little preparation can go a long way, and help your child feel like a contributing member of the group.
Ask your child to help you prepare a simple trail mix for the whole family to enjoy. You can either use your favorite recipe or give this one a try:
S’mores Trail Mix
1 cup mini marshmallows
1 cup Teddy Grahams
1 cup mini pretzels
1 bag Hershey’s milk chocolate drops or 1 bag of chocolate chips
Mix all ingredients together, and store in large Ziplock bag. Then, when you enjoy the trail mix over the weekend, make sure to give your child credit. “Thank you for preparing this snack for us! We would be hungry if you hadn’t help prepare this.”
Another fun camping treat is snack necklaces! Not only are these fun to make for the kids, but they love wearing them while they are out exploring and can easily grab a snack while on the go.
To prepare snack necklaces, set out bowls of round pretzels, Cheerios, Froot Loops and Gummy Life Savers. Tie a knot on the end of a nylon cord, and then allow your child to pick how they want to stack their snack necklaces, looping on one snack at a time. They will love getting this out at the campsite to take along on their adventures!
