Fine motor activities come in many different shapes and forms. This activity just so happens to come in the shape of a flower!

Making tissue paper flowers involves several steps that allow children to practice their pincer grip, aka thumb to pointer finger grip. Gather a few supplies and let’s make flowers!

Materials you’ll need:
– Tissue paper, whatever color you like
– Scissors
– Pipecleaner for the stem
– Vase

Instructions:

1. Start with one piece of colored tissue paper. Cut it into three equal pieces to end up with a rectangle that’s three layers deep. The larger the rectangle, the bigger the flower.
2. Keeping the layers together, begin folding the paper accordion style, starting on the shorter side. Each fold should be about 1 inch. This is where your child can practice fine motor folding skills.
3. When you reach the end, take a short length of pipe cleaner and knot it around the center of your tissue paper. This is effectively the ‘stem’ of your flower. Great step for your child to do as well.
4. Holding the stem, begin fluffing out the layers to form the flower. Pull carefully and crimp a bit to create a lovely flower shape.

Make a few flowers and let your child arrange them in a vase as they would with real flowers. Change out the color of your flowers occasionally to keep them “fresh” and timely according to season!
