To do: Pack reading material on your next picnic.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Books, picnic blanket, snacks
The park is a great place to run, jump, and play, but what about incorporating little learning games in your next park visit? Try this idea for a book picnic.
Let your child pick 3 or 4 of your favorite books from home. Alternatively, visit the library to check out books specifically about parks or nature. Pack the books, along with a nice blanket and a few snacks for your park visit. Feel out your child’s interests, and either start your day with a book, or end with it, as wind down time.
This dedicated reading time will show your child that books aren’t only for before bed, or at school, but rather can be enjoyed anywhere! Also, how nice does reading a book under the shade of a tree sound, stretched out on a soft blanket?!
Materials: A few favorite books or new reads, a blanket, a nice park with a shade tree. Here’s a book recommendation from Beth, of Our Montessori Life: Nature’s Day: Discover the World of Wonder on Your Doorstep, by Kay Maguire. “Pretty artwork with lots of encyclopedic information, but easy to understand for the young child.”
Your child will learn that reading is only limited by your imagination. In other words, it can happen anywhere! Your pre-readers will enjoy listening and learning, while children on the cusp of reading can help you sound out words!
For your older child: Be an attentive listener for your older children as they read to you. Having an audience is part of the fun, and they will love having your undivided attention. Invite siblings or playmates to listen as well, and enjoy some refreshments to make it special.
