To do: Pack books for your next park visit. Show your child that reading happens everywhere.
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: A park or outdoor area, 3-4 favorite books
The park is a great place to run, jump, and play, but what about incorporating little learning games in your next park visit? For this activity, dedicate some reading time while at the park.
First: Let your child pick 3 or 4 of your favorite books from home. Alternatively, visit the library to check out books specifically about parks or nature.
Next: Pack the books, along with a nice blanket and a few snacks for your park visit. Feel out your child’s interests, and either start your day with a book, or end with it, as wind down time.
Lastly: After enjoying books at the park, have a conversation with your child about the joy of reading not only before bedtime, but anywhere and anytime! Reading is truly a life-long hobby and it’s good to start early.
Here’s a book recommendation to try at the park from Beth, of Our Montessori Life: Nature’s Day: Discover the World of Wonder on Your Doorstep, by Kay Maguire. “Pretty artwork with lots of encyclopedic information, but easy to understand for the young child.”
For your older child: Be an attentive listener for your older children as they read to you. Having an audience is part of the fun, and they will love having your undivided attention. Invite siblings or playmates to listen as well, and enjoy some refreshments to make it special.
