To do: While picking out pumpkins, practice counting and simple addition.
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: A trip to a pumpkin patch or grocery store
__
Pumpkins and gourds are everywhere this time of year, so why not use them as a learning tool? First off, they are pretty fun to compare, with all their bumps and growths and colors. Secondly, they only come around one time a year, and your child will love playing with them!
Try the ideas below when you pick out your carving pumpkins or decorative gourds. Alternatively, even if you aren’t purchasing any, just have fun looking at them in the grocery store.
Counting work:
- How many pumpkins have stems?
- How many can fit in your palm?
- How many are light orange?
- How many are there total in this whole patch?! I bet you we can count them together!
Simple addition:
- How many pumpkins total are we holding?
- Let’s add the pumpkins in the cart to the pumpkins in your hands.
- If we buy 1 + 2 pumpkins, how many will we have total?
- We have 1 gourd at home. If we buy 2 more, how many will we have at our house?
Enjoy practicing math with pumpkins! Using tangible objects is a fun way to add a little counting into everyday routines.
