To Do: Place a shoe with a shoelace in a basket in your child’s play area.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Child’s shoe, lace, basket or bin
Allow time and space for your child to practice tying their shoes. Dressing themselves is a key step towards independence!
Here’s what we suggest: Use one of your child’s shoes, one that needs lacing, like a tennis shoe. Place it in a basket or bin by itself. Invite your child to practice with this shoe, saying “Any time you’d like to practice tying, just take this basket, put your shoes on, and give it a try! I’ll be here if you need a hand, just ask.”
Give as much assistance as you think your child needs to not become too frustrated with the work.
