To Do: Find clothing with big buttons for a young child to practice.
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: Sweater, jacket, or dressing frame with large buttons
With a little thought and preparation, your child can be really successful at getting themselves dressed from an early age.
Think about buttons. They are small, require a lot of fine motor control, and a garment typically has a lot of them. Frustrating for a young child, right?
If you can, for this activity, find a piece of clothing with BIG buttons. A chunky sweater or fall jacket. If you’re into sewing, try making a dressing frame like this.
Next, allow your child to manipulate the buttons whenever possible. The more practice with these big buttons, the better!
Then, as your child gains confidence and gets older, use smaller buttons and more of them.
Buttoning buttons is a learned skill, so help your child practice by preparing some special big buttoned pieces of clothing. Enjoy!
