The mortar (a bowl) and pestle (the club) is a kitchen tool used since ancient times. People have used it through the ages to grind all manner of substances, including grains, beans and herbs!
This is a low-tech tool that’s quite effective!
Your child can use this tool to build hand muscles and contribute to food preparation. Try introducing the mortar and pestle to grind things like:
- Peppercorns
- Coffee beans
- Herbs like basil, rosemary or mint
- Whole spices like cloves or nutmeg
Your child will love the big task of grinding and smashing ingredients. They will be your go-to helper in the kitchen in no time!
