I’m sure it’s true for almost every family that the kitchen is the most used room in the house. Everything from cooking to gathering to cleaning to the occasional family dance party. Since our daughter was very young, we’ve had a low cabinet in the kitchen for her to be able to get exactly what she needs to eat and drink totally on her own.
She’s also able to put everything away after it’s been washed which is equally as important as being able to get things out. The essentials for us are her bowls, utensils, cups, a spray bottle (which she also uses to water houseplants), her lunchbox, and a couple of dish towels.
At mealtimes she gets what she needs and brings it to the table. She’s also able to clean food messes and spills with her spray bottle, towels and her broom and dustpan, which we also have in the kitchen.
I’m a firm believer in allowing children to make mistakes which is one of the reasons I’ve always let our child use real glassware. In her cabinet she has a few espresso sized coffee mugs and some glass bowls. If they break, they break but to date that has yet to happen and she’s learned how to be careful when handling more fragile items.
What are some kitchen essentials your children use on a daily basis?
