Learning to read is a turning point in a child’s young life, but with that milestone can also come a bit of anxiety.
“There are a few things we can do, as adults in a child’s life, to support reading happening naturally.” says Ms. Wood.
Try these ideas for supporting literacy as a family rather than worrying about when exactly a child will begin reading independently:
- Read with your child at all times of day, not just before bedtime.
- Let your child see YOU reading a paperback or hardback book.
- Model why reading is important, like reading the grocery list or the handwritten letter from grandma.
