For the third week of January, we have a fun challenge that will get your family moving AND practicing reading.
In case you missed them, here are Week 1 and Week 2 of the Indoor Exercise Challenge. Send us photos of your family doing each week’s activity to be entered up to 4 times in our awesome yoga prize package giveaway.
Let’s get started with the Week 3 challenge!
Week 3: Action Verb Acting
Reading practice for early readers or new vocabulary for younger children.
If you can, grab a handful of sticky notes or scrap paper. On each, write one action verb. Here are some examples:
- Run (in place)
- Jump
- Spin
- Touch your Toes
- Reach
- March (in place)
- Laugh
- Cry
- Sing
- Hop
Next, place all of the cards face down on a table or on the floor. Invite your child to pick one card and turn it over. If they know how to read, let them read the action and then everyone DOES the action!
If they are pre-readers, read the action for them and say Go! If they aren’t sure what the word means, simply give them an example. Then go through the cards again and see if they can remember what the action means.
Lastly, if you’d prefer not to prepare cards, simply tell your child, “Let’s play the Action Verb game!” The first round, you can announce a new action every 10 seconds or so. Once they get the hang of it, let them say action verbs and you act them out.
This is a great way to move your bodies indoors while learning new skills like reading or vocabulary building. Get hopping!
